My Herbal Studies: How & Why I am Studying Herbal Medicine

Herbalism began as a last resort for me. I had a debilitating case of Lyme Disease and none of my mainstream doctors knew how to help me. In case you don’t know, Lyme Disease is extremely difficult to diagnose, partly because not enough is known about it and also because the medical testing that is available is not entirely dependable (If you have any questions about my treatment or my opinions on Western medicine’s treatment of Lyme, let me know in the comments or message me!).

Long story short, I had heard of a woman who specialized in holistic Lyme Disease treatment from one of my mom’s friends, so I went to see her. This woman sat down with me and listened to all of my symptoms, looked at all of the charts I had made, and read through my food journals. She was the first person to do this since I became sick. At the end of my first appointment, she told me what to eat, what not to eat and gave me a detailed vitamin and supplement protocol. I did absolutely everything that she told me to, exactly how she told me to.

Within three months, my Lyme Disease was gone. It was incredible.

Choosing Herbal Medicine as a Career

Now, a year later I am still Lyme Disease free and my body has almost returned to its natural balance. Not to be dramatic, but having Lyme Disease changed my life. Right around the time that I was following my protocol, I dropped out of Graduate school where I was studying library science. Looking back, I don’t really know what I was thinking. I wouldn’t make a good librarian.

After I finished my Lyme protocol, I was trying to figure out what I was going to do next. Now that I had dropped out of Grad. school and had a bachelor’s degree that I didn’t want, I needed to find something that I wanted to do. It dawned on me that herbal medicine might be the thing. I had always loved gardening and studying nature. In fact, I had started college as a Biologist! So I started researching where I could learn the basics to just dip my toes in the water.

The Herbal Academy

The school that I found, and fell in love with was The Herbal Academy. I took the Introduction course and learned so much. I found their content to be approachable, and detailed. I loved that I could work at my own pace online and that they were so focused on the Earth and that they did not subscribe to one herbal tradition or diet (vegan, paleo, vegetarian, etc.).

Shortly after finishing that course, I began taking the Intermediate course and found it to be even more detailed. It has been such a rewarding experience and I am so looking forward to continuing my studies with The Herbal Academy.

My Goals

When I began this journey I thought that I might open a clinical practice at some point, and while that might be in the plans, my main goal is to make herbal medicine as approachable and affordable as I can. I believe that everyone can benefit from a more natural approach to life and medicine. I don’t wish to be one to shove any way of living down anyone’s throat, and while I find that my body responds the best to whole food and natural remedies, I think that if you want a donut or four, you should have it.

I hope to share what I know and what I learn to encourage others to live a life of balance with the help of the herbs and whole foods that come straight from our Earth.
